Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Performs Wyoming’s First Amulet™ Procedures

Cheyenne Regional Medical Center has performed Wyoming’s first implantations of the Amplatzer™ Amulet™ Left Atrial Appendage Occluder from Abbott, giving certain patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) a new option to help reduce their risk of stroke.

The procedures were performed by Dr. Daniel Wann, an electrophysiologist with Cheyenne Regional Heart and Vascular Institute.

For some patients with AFib, the Amulet device offers an alternative to long-term blood-thinning medication. During a minimally invasive procedure, the device seals a small area of the heart where blood clots commonly form, helping prevent them from traveling to the brain and causing a stroke. The Amulet device immediately seals the left atrial appendage, eliminating the need for blood-thinning medication following the procedure.

“Not every patient with atrial fibrillation is a good candidate for long-term blood thinners,” Wann said. “The Amulet device gives us another option to help reduce stroke risk while allowing patients to receive this care close to home.”

“Performing Wyoming’s first Amulet procedures is an exciting milestone for our heart program,” Wann said. “More importantly, it means patients across Wyoming now have access to another treatment option that can help reduce stroke risk without having to leave the state.”

The addition of the Amulet device reflects Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to bringing innovative cardiovascular technology and treatment options to patients throughout Wyoming and the surrounding region.
