Cheyenne Regional, Cheyenne Animal Shelter Partnership Helps Patients Get Care Without Worrying About Pets

For some community members, a trip to the hospital comes with an added worry: who will care for their pet. A partnership between Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) and the Cheyenne Animal Shelter (CAS) is helping remove that barrier.

Through the program, the Cheyenne Animal Shelter provides temporary boarding for pets belonging to Cheyenne Regional patients who are experiencing a medical emergency, undergoing a scheduled procedure or otherwise unable to care for their animals. The service ensures patients can seek care when they need it, without delaying treatment out of concern for their pets.

In 2025, 55 pets received temporary boarding services through the Cheyenne Animal Shelter and were reunited with their families.
“Pets are family for so many of the patients we serve,” said Niki Harrison, CAS director of development and community outreach. “This partnership helps remove a real barrier to care and gives people peace of mind during a stressful time.”

The program has supported patients in a variety of situations, including unexpected hospital visits and planned procedures. It has also helped care for pets involved in traumatic incidents, including car crashes, ensuring both people and animals receive the support they need.

While pets are staying at the shelter, owners also have the option to add low-cost vaccinations and spay or neuter services, helping support their long-term health.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to meeting the needs of the community and supporting patients beyond the walls of the hospital.
