NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy
Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is expanding access to advanced behavioral health care with the addition of NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy. This innovative treatment was recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adolescents ages 15 to 21 diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
Understanding Major Depression
Major depression is one of the most common behavioral health conditions in the United States. It can affect school performance, relationships and everyday activities. Depression occurs when communication between certain brain regions responsible for mood regulation is disrupted. This disruption often involves neurotransmitters—chemicals produced by brain cells that help transmit signals throughout the brain.
While medications can increase neurotransmitter activity and help many patients, they may not work for everyone and can sometimes cause unwanted side effects.
How TMS Therapy Works
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation offers a noninvasive, medication-free treatment option for patients with depression. The therapy uses targeted electromagnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.
During treatment, a small coil is placed against the patient’s scalp to deliver gentle magnetic pulses to a specific region of the brain. An initial appointment determines the precise treatment location and pulse strength for each individual.
- Treatment sessions: Approximately 18–30 minutes
- Typical schedule: Five days per week for four to six weeks
- During treatment: Patients remain awake and comfortable
- After treatment: Patients can return to normal daily activities immediately
FDA Approval and Safety
The FDA cleared NeuroStar TMS therapy for adolescents in March 2024 following clinical studies showing significant improvement in symptoms of depression. The treatment is generally well tolerated, with the most common side effect being mild, temporary scalp discomfort.
