After-Hours Care

For life-threatening emergencies in which your child may require resuscitation (e.g. your child is not breathing, is choking severely, is unconscious, is having a seizure, etc.) call 911 immediately.

The Cheyenne Children’s Clinic After-Hours Telephone Care Program gives you and your family immediate access to urgent health care and advice when the clinic is closed.

The After Hours Telephone Care Program is intended for urgent problems regarding illnesses or injuries.

When your child is sick outside of office hours, call our office at (307) 635-7961. The clinic’s answering service will record your name, telephone number, and message, and then notify the system’s after-hours staff. An experienced pediatric nurse from Children’s Hospital Colorado will call you back to assess the situation and make a recommendation for what to do next, based on the same triage protocols the nurses at Cheyenne Children’s Clinic use.

Depending on the information you provide the after-hours nurse, you will either be given home care guidance, be referred to the Emergency Room, or your call may be forwarded to the on-call physician from the clinic, who will then return your call. Please have paper and pen available to write down any instructions you receive.

When you call, please have the following information available:

  • Your child’s main symptoms and the duration of those symptoms
  • Any chronic disease or health problems your child has
  • Your child’s temperature, if he or she is sick
  • The names and dosages of any medications your child is taking
  • Your child’s approximate weight
  • Your pharmacy’s name and phone number
  • Any questions you might have

Things to remember when calling the clinic after office hours:

  • Always call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.
  • For poisonings, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

    • If you need routine prescription refills, appointment scheduling, or advice concerning non-urgent matters, please call the clinic during normal office hours (Mon – Fri, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Insurance Considerations
    • If it is determined that your child needs to visit a doctor or emergency room after-hours, it is important to know your insurance carrier requirements regarding where to go and any pre-approval that might be required. Press *87 to deactivate and press *77 to reactivate anonymous call rejection.
